Peter Shaffer was born in Liverpool in 1926. After studying at Cambridge, he worked among other things as a music editor before becoming known as a playwright. He achieved his breakthrough in 1958 with the award-winning play “Five Finger Exercise.” His best-known dramas include “The Royal Hunt of the Sun” (1964), “Black Comedy” (1965), “Equus” (1973), “Amadeus” (1979), and “Yonadab” (1985). “Amadeus” was a successful Broadway production in 1980. Shaffer received an Oscar for the screenplay of Miloš Forman’s film adaptation.
