Peter Dempf, born in Augsburg in 1959, studied German, history and social studies for a career in grammar-school teaching. Before becoming a grammar-school teacher, he worked as a lecturer in German as a foreign language and as a trainer in body language and rhetoric for industrial companies. He published novels, nonfiction, plays, screenplays, radio contributions and short stories, and became particularly known for his historical novels, including Die Brunnenmeisterin, Fürstin der Bettler and Herrin der Schmuggler. His literary work received several awards, including the 2001 Literature Prize of the District of Augsburg. He began writing at the age of twelve.
