Penelope Lively

Born in Cairo in 1933, Penelope Lively studied history at the University of Oxford. From 1970 onward, she published novels, short stories, and children’s books. Among her best-known works is the novel Moon Tiger, which won the Booker Prize in 1987. She had previously been shortlisted for the prize twice. In recognition of her literary work, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2001 and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2012. After her parents’ divorce, Lively grew up with her father in Egypt and initially received private tutoring.
