Paul Verlaine

Paul Verlaine (1844–1896) was a French writer and poet. He was born in Metz and died in Paris. After working for the Paris municipal administration, he devoted himself to poetry; his first collection, “Poèmes saturniens,” was published in 1866. His notable works include “Sagesse” (1880), “Jadis et Naguère” (1884), and “Parallèlement” (1889). Characterized by musicality, fluid rhythms, and melancholic moods, his poetry influenced later generations of poets. A passionate and turbulent relationship with Arthur Rimbaud shaped a period of his life. Following his conviction for shooting and injuring Rimbaud, Verlaine spent two years in prison.
