Paul Theroux (born 1941 in Medford, Massachusetts) is an American author known chiefly for his travel writing and novels. His best-known travel books include *The Old Patagonian Express* and *The Great Railway Bazaar*, alongside numerous novels and short stories. In the 1960s, Theroux worked as a teacher for the American Peace Corps in Malawi and Uganda, and later taught for three years at a university in Singapore. He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013.
