Paul Ricoeur

Paul Ricœur (1913–2005) was a French philosopher. He taught, among other places, at the Sorbonne, the University of Paris-Nanterre, and the University of Chicago, where he succeeded Paul Tillich. His major works include *Philosophy of Will*, *Interpretation*, and *The Rule of Metaphor*. His thought was shaped by phenomenology, psychoanalysis, structuralism, and hermeneutics. During his time as a prisoner of war, he learned German and studied German philosophy. He received numerous honors, including the Dante Prize, the Karl Jaspers Prize, and the Kyoto Prize.
