Paul Klee

Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a German painter and graphic artist and one of the major figures of classical modernism. He grew up in Bern and studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1898, also traveling in Italy. From 1920/21 he taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. In 1931 he became a professor at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, but lost the position after the Nazis came to power and returned to Switzerland in 1933. Alongside his wide-ranging visual art, which also included theater puppets, Klee wrote works on art theory and poetry and left extensive diaries and correspondence.
