Patrick Hamilton

Patrick Hamilton was born in Sussex in 1904 and died in 1962. He initially worked as an actor and shorthand typist before establishing himself as a writer. He published his first novel, *Monday Morning*, at the age of 21. He became best known for the plays *Gaslight* and *Rope*, both of which were adapted for the screen; *Rope* was directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1948. His notable novels also include *Hangover Square* (1941). In his spare time, Hamilton enjoyed exploring London by bicycle, particularly the city’s darker districts.
