P. D. James, born Phyllis Dorothy James, was born in Oxford in 1920 and died there in November 2014. Before devoting herself to writing full time in 1962, she worked for many years in hospital administration and in the criminal department of the British Home Office. In 1991, she became Baroness James of Holland Park. She was best known for her crime novels featuring Commander Adam Dalgliesh, who investigates most of her cases. Her work received numerous awards and prizes.
