Omar Khayyām was born in Nishapur in 1048 and died there in 1123. He was a Persian mathematician and astronomer and is regarded as one of the leading scholars of his time. Alongside his scientific work, he composed numerous quatrains known as rubāʿī (plural: rubāʿiyāt). His poems are considered classics of Persian literature. Khayyām also designed a calendar that became highly significant in the Persian-speaking cultural sphere.
