Ogai Mori

Mori Ōgai (born Mori Rintarō, 1862–1922) was a Japanese physician, writer, and translator. He studied medicine at the Imperial University of Tokyo and then spent four years in Germany, where, alongside bacteriology, he developed an interest in European literature, philosophy, theater, and painting. After returning to Japan, he taught at the Army Medical College and later became its director. As a translator, he rendered works including Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House,” and Goethe’s “Faust” into Japanese.
