Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918–2013) was a South African politician and a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC) in the struggle against apartheid. He was born in Mvezo in the former Transkei and was arrested in 1962. Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964, he spent a total of 27 years in prison. After his release in 1990, he was elected president of the ANC in 1991. In 1993, he and F. W. de Klerk received the Nobel Peace Prize. From 1994 to 1999, Mandela served as South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
