Nell Leyshon was born in Glastonbury and wrote novels, plays and radio dramas, which received numerous awards. Her first novel, Black Dirt, was longlisted for the Orange Prize and shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize. Her second novel, The Color of Milk, was nominated for the Prix Femina alongside works by James Salter and Zeruya Shalev. Her other novels include The Woods and I, Ellyn.
