Natsume Sōseki (1867–1916) was a Japanese writer and one of the major representatives of Japan’s literary modernism. After studying English literature, he lived in London from 1900 to 1903. He later worked as a professor of English at the University of Tokyo before devoting himself entirely to writing. From 1906 onward, he published numerous novels, including *Kokoro*. His work explores tensions between Western and traditional values, as well as the effects of industrialization on Japanese society.
