Nancy Pelosi is an American politician. In 2007, she became the first woman elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving in the position for a total of eight years with interruptions. Early in her political career, she focused particularly on children’s issues and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Under her leadership, Congress passed significant legislation, especially in the area of health care. Pelosi also led the House’s efforts to investigate the January 6 attack and advocated for human rights. She and her husband, Paul, have five children and ten grandchildren.
