Nan Goldin

Nan Goldin is a photographer whose work since the 1970s has documented the lives and relationships of people in queer and trans communities. She received her first camera at 15 and began taking Polaroids of herself and those around her. In 1978 she moved to New York, where she presented slideshows in nightclubs and underground cinemas. Her best-known work, “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency,” was published as a book in 1986. Her other publications include “A Double Life,” made with David Armstrong, “The Other Side,” “The Beautiful Smile” and “Diving for Pearls.” In 2018, Goldin and colleagues founded P.A.I.N. (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now), an activist group advocating education and a less stigmatizing approach to addiction.
