Monika Wagner studied painting at the Kunstakademie in Kassel and art history, archaeology and literary studies in Hamburg and London. After working as a research assistant at the University of Tübingen, she taught at the University of Hamburg’s Department of Art History from 1986 to 2010. Her research focuses on art from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, the history and theory of perception, the design of public spaces, and the significance of artistic materials. Her publications include “Das Material der Kunst. Eine andere Geschichte der Moderne” (2001), “William Turner” (2011), and “Marmor und Asphalt. Soziale Oberflächen im Berlin des 20. Jahrhunderts” (2018).
