Mohammed (c. 570–632) was an Arab religious leader and is regarded as the prophet of Islam. Born in Mecca, he began proclaiming religious visions around 610. In 622, he migrated with his followers to Medina, where he established an Islamic community. He later returned to Mecca and gained considerable influence there. Mohammed was married to Khadija, a wealthy merchant’s widow, and they had six children.
