Minna Canth

Minna Canth (1844–1897) was a Finnish writer associated with literary realism and an advocate for women’s rights. She was born in Tampere and died in Kuopio. Influenced in part by Henrik Ibsen, she addressed social and ideological questions in her plays and stories, including the relationship between religion and Darwinism. Her works often presented the family as a setting for moral conflict. In Finland, her birthday is commemorated as Equality Day.
