Milton Hatoum

Milton Hatoum (born 1952 in Manaus, Brazil) is a Brazilian writer and the son of Lebanese immigrants. After studying architecture in São Paulo, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. He subsequently taught French literature at the Federal University of Amazonas and served as a guest lecturer in Brazilian literature at the University of California, Berkeley. His first novel, “Relato de um certo Oriente” (1989; English: “The Account of the Orient”), received Brazil’s Jabuti Literary Prize in 1990. His second novel, “Dois irmãos” (2000; English: “The Brothers”), also won the Jabuti Prize in 2001. Hatoum’s fiction connects the world of the Amazon region with the experiences of Lebanese immigrants in Brazil.
