Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616) was a Spanish writer and one of the leading authors of Spain’s Golden Age. He became world-famous for his novel Don Quixote, whose first part was published in 1605 and sequel in 1615. The work is widely regarded as a foundational modern novel. Cervantes had previously served as a soldier and took part in the Battle of Lepanto. He later spent five years as a captive in Algiers and worked, among other occupations, as a tax collector. In addition to novels, he wrote short fiction, poetry, and plays.
