Michael Wagener, born in 1966 in Morsbach/Sieg, is an artist, designer, author, editor and publisher. He studied philosophy, art history and German studies at Goethe University Frankfurt, followed by sculpture and photography at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main. Since 1992, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad. In 1997 he founded the gutleut 15 exhibition space in Frankfurt am Main and, in 2002, the gutleut verlag. His publications include taschenatlas / taschenkosmos, a book-shaped sketch of his project neuer atlas, the dauerlandschaft series, Die Kartografie der Vögel, grenzlinien and aussichtsplattform | welten.9 | darsolarpolar, co-created with Dirk Uwe Hansen. taschenatlas / taschenkosmos received an award from Stiftung Buchkunst. Wagener was also a scholarship holder of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes and received the Munch Scholarship in 2002 and the Venice Scholarship in 2003. He received the Special Prize of the Hessian Publishing Award in 2020 and the German Publishing Award in 2021.
