Michael Matheus (born 1953) is a historian. From 1994 to 2018, he was Professor of Medieval and Modern History and Comparative Regional History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. From 2002 to 2012, he directed the German Historical Institute in Rome. He also served as chair and director of the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of Rhineland-Palatinate and as chair of the German Study Centre in Venice from 2013 to 2021. His research focuses on the history of Mainz and Rheinhessen and on comparative European history, particularly that of Germany and Italy.
