Michael Guttenbrunner

Michael Guttenbrunner (born 1919) studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna and worked as a poet and editor. He was persecuted and imprisoned for political reasons in 1935 and 1938. Drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1940, he was sentenced to imprisonment for insubordination in 1944 and pardoned for “front-line probation.” After returning to Carinthia, he edited, among other publications, Die Einheit, the journal of the Carinthian partisans. His honors included the Georg Trakl Prize for Poetry (1954), the Austrian State Prize for Poetry (1966), the Carinthian Culture Prize (1987), an honorary doctorate from the University of Klagenfurt (1994), and the Theodor Kramer Prize (2004).
