Max Reger

Max Reger (1873–1916) was a German composer, organist, pianist, conductor, and music educator. He studied with Hugo Riemann. From 1905 he taught organ and composition at the Academy in Munich, and from 1907 he taught composition at the Leipzig Conservatory. Between 1911 and 1914 he directed the Meiningen court orchestra. His principal fields included organ and chamber music, as well as choral and orchestral music. His style combined expressive harmony with polyphony shaped by Johann Sebastian Bach, while drawing on the musical ideals of Johannes Brahms. Among his significant sacred works is “The 100th Psalm” (1908/09). Although raised Catholic, Reger valued Protestant chorales and composed numerous works for Protestant church-music use.
