Mauricio Rosencof

Mauricio Rosencof, born on 30 June 1933 in Florida, Uruguay, to Polish-Jewish immigrants, is a Uruguayan writer and playwright. A leading member of the urban guerrilla group MLN-Tupamaros, he was arrested in 1972 and, after the 1973 military coup, held in solitary confinement in various military barracks together with other prisoners as a “state hostage.” He was released in 1985 after the end of the dictatorship. He later served as cultural director of Montevideo. His best-known works include the novels The Bataraz and The Letters That Never Arrived, as well as Prison Years.
