Matthieu Ricard, born in 1946 in France, is a trained molecular biologist and cell geneticist with a doctorate. He worked as a researcher at the Institut Pasteur in Paris before becoming a Buddhist monk and devoting himself to the study of Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas. Ricard has written several internationally published books, including *The Monk and the Philosopher*, a dialogue with his father, the philosopher Jean-François Revel, and *Quantum and Lotus*, co-written with astrophysicist Trinh Xuan Thuan.
