Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade (1740–1814), was a French writer, novelist, and philosopher from the nobility. He spent much of his life in prisons and asylums, where he continued his literary work. His best-known works include „The 120 Days of Sodom“ (written in 1785 and published posthumously), „Justine, or the Misfortunes of Virtue“ (1791), and „Philosophy in the Boudoir“ (1795). His writings, marked by eroticism, radical atheism, and materialism, were long subject to censorship and remain controversial; the term “sadism” derives from his name.
