Markus Bernauer

Markus Bernauer was born in Basel and studied German literature, art history, modern and general history, and philosophy in Basel, Marburg, and Berlin. He taught literary studies at Technische Universität Berlin and headed the Jean Paul edition project at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Bernauer edited, among other works, writings by Paul Heyse, the notebooks of Wilhelm Heinse, and letters to Jean Paul. Together with Josefine Kitzbichler, he edited the two-volume collection “Freiheit, Gleichheit, Sinnlichkeit. Literatur des Libertinismus in Deutschland,” devoted to libertine literature in Germany. His publications address European literature since the eighteenth century, as well as art theory and the visual arts.
