Marianne Gareis

Marianne Gareis (born in 1957 in southern Germany) studied Latin American studies, English and ethnology at the Free University of Berlin. In 1989, she began her career as a literary translator from Portuguese and Spanish. Her translations include works by José Saramago, Machado de Assis, Andréa del Fuego, Sergio Álvarez and Samanta Schweblin. In 2014, she received the Straelen Translator’s Prize from the Kunststiftung NRW for her translation of Machado de Assis’s Brazilian classic Dom Casmurro. In 2019, she was awarded the Hieronymus Ring by the Association of German-Language Translators.
