Maria Leitner

Maria Leitner (1892–1942) grew up in a German-speaking Jewish family in Budapest and later worked as a journalist in Vienna and Berlin. Her first novel, Hotel Amerika, was placed on the Nazis’ list of books to be burned in 1933. She went into exile in 1934. After being interned at Camp de Gurs, she lived underground in France from 1940 and died there in 1942.
