Maria Edgeworth

Maria Edgeworth (1768–1849) was an Anglo-Irish writer. She wrote novels, children’s books, and works on education. Her best-known novel, “Castle Rackrent,” was published anonymously in 1800 and is regarded as an early example of the regional novel in English. Educated at home by her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, she also helped manage the family estate in Ireland. Her experience there informed her socially observant portrayals of Irish rural life. Her writing addressed morality, education, and the responsibilities of the landed gentry, and combined social commentary with humor and psychological insight.
