Marcus Rediker, born in 1951 in Owensboro, Kentucky, grew up in a working-class family. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and taught as a professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh. His social history works focus on “history from below.” His research received several awards, including the International Labor History Book Prize in 2001.
