Marcus Aurelius (121–180) was a Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher. He ruled from 161 to 180 and is regarded as the last major representative of the later Stoa. He was adopted by Antoninus Pius and became his co-ruler and son-in-law in 146. Until 169, he formally ruled together with his adoptive brother, Lucius Verus. Marcus Aurelius is best known for the “Meditations,” a collection of Stoic reflections on ethics and the conduct of life.
