Maiken Nielsen was born in Hamburg in 1965. She spent part of her childhood and youth aboard cargo ships, where she was taught by her parents. After completing secondary school in Hamburg, she hitchhiked through Europe for a year and subsequently studied linguistics, among other subjects, in Aix-en-Provence. She worked as an author, reporter and broadcaster for NDR Television, producing documentaries including “When the Storm Surge Hit Hamburg” and “Stolen Lives – Europe in Neuengamme Concentration Camp.” She also writes novels and speaks six languages.
