M. W. Craven was born in Carlisle and grew up in Newcastle. He joined the British Army as a teenager and served for ten years. He then studied social work and worked as a probation officer for nearly two decades before becoming a full-time writer of crime novels and thrillers. His work has received several awards, including the CWA Gold Dagger in 2019 and the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award in 2022. His novel The Botanist was named Crime Novel of the Year in Harrogate in 2023.
