Lukian von Samosata

Lucian of Samosata was born around 120 CE in Samosata, in present-day Turkey. Few details of his life are securely documented. He probably first trained as a sculptor under his uncle before studying rhetoric. He later worked as a writer and courtroom speaker. He is regarded as an ancient sophist, satirist, and sharp-witted critic. Sources disagree about the year of his death, giving approximately 180 or 200 CE.
