Luc Boltanski, born in 1940, is a French sociologist. He taught and conducted research at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, where he served as a professor of sociology and research director. He was also a member of the Groupe de sociologie politique et morale. Boltanski studied under Pierre Bourdieu. He became known particularly for his contributions to a pragmatic sociology of critique and for his analyses of the “new spirit of capitalism.”
