Louis Calaferte

Louis Calaferte (1928–1994) was a writer born in Turin who grew up in a poor suburb of Lyon. From the age of 13, he worked in a factory. His extensive body of work includes novels, notebooks, plays, poetry, and essays, much of it shaped by autobiographical elements. One of his best-known books is the novel *Septentrion* (1963), which was placed on the Index because of its erotic content and republished roughly twenty years later. Calaferte died in Dijon in 1994.
