Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich

Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich (1901–1979) was a German writer and scholar. During the Nazi era, she was involved in the antifascist resistance. She is best known for the six-volume Native American novel cycle “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin,” whose original version was published in 1951, as well as for the novel “Nacht über der Prärie” (1966) and four subsequent books dealing with the lives of Native Americans on reservations. From 1960, she was a professor of ancient history at Humboldt University of Berlin, and from 1962 a member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. The Oglala bestowed on her the honorary name Lakota-Tashina (“Lakota’s protective blanket”).
