Lion Feuchtwanger (1884–1958) was a German novelist, playwright, and translator. He began his literary career as a theater critic and became known chiefly for historical and contemporary novels. His major works include The Ugly Duchess (1923), Jew Süss (1925), Success (1930), The Oppermanns (1933), Exile (1940), Goya (1950), and The Jew of Toledo (1954).
