Lewis Wallace

Lewis “Lew” Wallace (1827–1905) was an American lawyer, jurist, politician, Union Army general during the Civil War, and writer. He served as governor of the New Mexico Territory from 1878 to 1881 and subsequently as the U.S. ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. He is best known for his historical novel Ben-Hur, published in 1880.
