Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian writer from an aristocratic family. After abandoning his studies, he served in the tsarist army in the Caucasus and during the Crimean War; his “Sevastopol Sketches” brought him early recognition. He later advocated for the reform of rural education. His novels “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina” established his international literary reputation. Tolstoy was married to Sofya Andreyevna Behrs, and they had 13 children.
