Leonhard Koppelmann was born in Aachen in 1970 and grew up in Cologne. He studied theatre directing at the University of Hamburg from 1991 to 1995. From 1991 onward, he worked as a radio-play author as well as a theatre and radio-play director. He directed more than 200 radio plays, including adaptations of works such as Max Frisch’s “Homo Faber,” Umberto Eco’s “Baudolino,” Thomas Mann’s “Doctor Faustus,” and Ken Follett’s “The Pillars of the Earth.” His production of Rainer Werner Schimmelpfennig’s “Für eine bessere Welt” was named Radio Play of the Year in 2004; other productions were repeatedly selected as Radio Play of the Month. In 2017, Koppelmann was appointed a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts.
