Leonardo Sciascia (1921–1989) was an Italian writer, essayist and publicist from Racalmuto in Sicily. After training in education, he worked as a primary-school teacher until 1957. His fiction and essays frequently explored Sicily, power, justice and social corruption. Among his best-known works are The Day of the Owl, The Council of Egypt, Death of the Inquisitor, To Each His Due and The Knight and Death. Several of his widely acclaimed novels were adapted for the screen. From 1975 to 1977, Sciascia served as a member of the municipal council of Palermo.
