Author · 3 books
Leigh Calvez worked as a scientist and naturalist specializing in whales and dolphins. She was research director of the Ocean Mammal Institute and studied, among other subjects, the effects of shipping on endangered humpback whales off Maui, Hawaii. In 1998, she led the only independent research team to observe the U.S. Navy’s tests of active low-frequency sonar on humpback whales in their Hawaiian nursery grounds. Her work with marine mammals led her to nature writing; she published articles and books on nature-related subjects and taught writing courses.
