Laurie Lee (1914–1997) was an English poet, writer, journalist and screenwriter. He grew up in Gloucestershire and became best known for his autobiographical trilogy, which begins with Cider with Rosie (1959). Another notable work is As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969), an account of his journey to Spain. As a young man, Lee spent time there earning a living as a street musician; during the Spanish Civil War, he returned to Spain as a volunteer with the International Brigades. From the 1940s onward, he worked in England as a journalist and screenwriter before devoting himself increasingly to his literary work.
