Laurie Colwin (1944–1992) was born in Manhattan and grew up in Chicago and Philadelphia. After studying at Bard College and Columbia University, she worked as a translator, editor, and food columnist. At the age of 25, she sold her first short story to The New Yorker. She published several novels, numerous short stories, and cookbooks. Colwin died in New York in 1992.
