Lauren Berlant

Lauren Berlant (1957–2021) was a scholar of literature and culture who worked at the University of Chicago. Berlant taught in the university’s Department of English Language and Literature from 1984 and held the George M. Pullman Distinguished Service Professorship until 2021. The book *Cruel Optimism* received the René Wellek Prize from the American Comparative Literature Association in 2012.
