Kurt Vonnegut (1922–2007) was an American writer. Born in Indianapolis, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and became a prisoner of war in Germany. He experienced the bombing of Dresden during his captivity, an event he later drew on in his best-known novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, or The Children's Crusade (1969). His first novel, Player Piano, was published in 1952. Vonnegut went on to write numerous novels and short stories, often marked by satirical social criticism.
